Why a skipper
Who our skippers are, and what they do
A skipper makes a charter possible without a licence and makes it easier with one. You still choose where to go and when to swim; the skipper takes the berthing, the anchoring, the forecast and the decision to stay in port.
Professional skippers licensed for the waters they sail, most of them with many seasons on the boats you charter. We do not publish profiles: a biography is a claim, and we would rather tell you what every skipper is held to.
The skipper does
- Berths, anchors and moors the boat; plans each day's leg with you around the forecast.
- Checks the boat in and out with the base, and handles the paperwork at the marina.
- Keeps watch under way and decides when the weather says no.
- Knows the bays, the quays and the restaurants worth the detour.
The skipper does not
- Cook, clean or serve — that is the cook, a separate line.
- Pay marina or fuel bills — those stay the charter's running costs.
- Sail through the night to make a schedule.
- Act as a guide ashore.
The skipper eats with you or on a food allowance, sleeps in a cabin of their own and keeps a professional distance from your holiday. Tell us in the enquiry how you like to sail — early starts, long legs, children aboard — and we pass it on to the skipper before you meet.
Our crew, our prices
What our skipper and cook cost
We supply and pay our crew ourselves, so these are our own weekly rates rather than a charter company's — with one floor, below.
- Skipper, a week
- from 2.100 €
- Cook, a week
- from 2.100 €
- Food with our cook, per person a week
- 500 €
- Skipper's food without a cook
- Yours
Whole weeks, paid in advance with the boat.
Whole weeks; cooks and runs the galley — the food itself is the next line.
Half board — breakfast and lunch, sometimes a dinner or two — for every guest, children included; the crew's meals come out of it.
The skipper eats with you, or a food allowance of about 30 € a day.
Never below the charter company's own rate: where its skipper or cook costs more, that higher figure applies, and the boat's page shows it. A crewed or luxury yacht comes with the company's own crew in the price.
Where your skipper sleeps
A real cabin, never the bow locker
A real bed
A double, a bunk cabin or a front single — never a mattress in a sail locker.
A toilet without crossing a guest cabin
A front single counts only when the skipper can reach a toilet from the corridor, or has one inside it.
The search already counts it
Choose "With skipper" and set your party: every boat shown sleeps your group plus the skipper.
Questions
Sailing with our skipper
Anything else about the crew: write to us — a person who has sailed with them answers.
Do I tip the skipper?
It is customary, not required: 5–10 % of the skipper's weekly price is usual for a good week, given in cash at the end.
Can we sail ourselves with the skipper aboard?
Yes — most guests do, with the skipper beside them. A licensed guest can take the helm all week; the skipper remains responsible for the boat.
Does the skipper speak my language?
English always; tell us in the enquiry if another language matters and we will say what we can do before you book.
Your week, with someone who has done it a hundred times
